A total of 16,939 children were included in the study. The patients had been prescribed fluoroquinolone-ciprofloxacin (equivalent to ciprofloxacin) for acute UTIs between 1 July 2011 and 25 August 2011. The diagnosis and treatment of UTIs were based on the urine culture and bacterial culture. The treatment of acute UTIs and the treatment of UTIs in children with UTIs were conducted at the same time as the evaluation of the symptoms of UTIs. In addition, in the case of the treatment of acute UTIs, the patients had been treated for more than 12 weeks before the diagnosis and the symptoms of UTIs, including pyelonephritis, acute pyelonephritis, and acute bacterial infection, were evaluated. The patients were divided into 2 groups: the group receiving the combination of fluoroquinolone and fluoroquinolone monohydrate for UTIs, and the group receiving the combination of fluoroquinolone and fluoroquinolone monohydrate for acute UTIs. The patients in the control group were treated with the same treatment regimen, but the dose of ciprofloxacin was reduced by 2.5 mg/kg of ciprofloxacin. In addition, the patients were instructed to continue taking the combination for at least one week after the first dose of ciprofloxacin.
The patients were followed up for a minimum of 12 weeks (6 days) after the last dose of ciprofloxacin.
The mean age of the patients in the groups receiving the combination of fluoroquinolone and fluoroquinolone monohydrate was 39.4±4.8 years, with a mean weight of 138.1±11.6 kg. The mean age of the patients in the control group was 34.7±3.2 years with a mean weight of 146.4±10.3 kg. The mean age of the patients in the treatment group was 35.5±4.4 years with a mean weight of 154.3±10.1 kg. The mean age of the patients in the control group was 32.9±3.9 years with a mean weight of 128.6±10.4 kg. The treatment of UTIs caused a total of 1,739 UTIs in patients (2,819 of which were acute UTIs and 8,357 UTIs in the control group). In addition, there were 7,847 UTIs in the treatment group, and the control group had 7,846 UTIs. The patients in the treatment group had a mean weight of 168.4±11.6 kg. The mean weight of the patients in the treatment group was 148.3±10.3 kg.
